Nature of Emotion
The word emotion is derived from the Latin
word emover which means the spirit that moves us. This energy is the
transmitter and recorder of all feeling, thoughts and actions. It determines
our aspirations and tendencies, beliefs and commitments. In other words,
emotions are the streams of energy that run within us. Emotions activate our
lives, shape our perceptions and regulate behaviors. A conglomeration of all
this then emanates outwardly and influences others. Basically these are your
emotions which interact with others and influence them.
Immobilizing depression, overwhelming
anxiety, raging anger, manic behavior - these are all pathological consequences
of suppressed and tightly controlled emotions. Hence, emotions are the results
of physiological stimuli and subjective-cognitive responses.
Your emotions are broader than your minds.
They are the sources of energy, experience, deep understanding and deep
relationship in your lives. Emotions make up and give shapes to your mind as
well as the entire personality pattern.
Every emotion is based upon some cognition.
These emotions, in turn, influence the thoughts. Emotions and thoughts are the
basic attributes. In the human beings emotions and thoughts are inseparably
interwoven. They even influence each other. For example persons in a good mood
are able to process information effectively but they are less motivated to do
so when in a neutral mood. When emotions are guided constructively, they
enhance intellectual performance.
This is a guiding formula in the field of
Emotional Intelligence.
Intelligence is no longer given more
importance than the interpersonal relations. In life some odds are observed.
The people who have similar schooling and other opportunities do differently in
life. IQ scale does not explain this difference in their performance. Their
Intelligence Quotient does not tell as to why people from the same or similar
backgrounds, achieve different and varying goals in life.
Daniel Goleman says that the reason behind
this is their different Emotional Quotient. Practical skills and the ability to
handle other people contribute a lot towards the success of those who succeed.
Daniel Goleman says that those who are successful have an armory equipped with
weapons for managing the emotions of others.
People, who are familiar with the net of
emotions of themselves, generally have a power to control and manage the
emotions of others also. They can even read and deal effectively with other
people's feelings. While the people who do not have control over their own
emotional life, usually keep fighting inner battles with themselves. This fight
sabotages their ability to focus on work and think clearly.
Emotional Intelligence:
Daniel Goleman says that the Emotional Intelligence
is the ability to know what emotion one has, how strong they are, what the
reasons behind such emotions are. The Emotional Quotient also deals with the
management, strategies, prevention and control of such emotions in a productive
manner. Basically it is a type of social intelligence. Emotional Quotient also
means the capacity to recognize our own emotions and those of others. This EQ
is used for motivating ourselves and for managing emotions of our own and those
who are in relationships with us.
The construct of emotional intelligence is not only the ability to monitor one's own and others' emotions, but
to discriminate among them, and further to the use this information about
emotions to guide one's own thinking and actions. Emotional intelligence is a
critical factor contributing to the personal, academic, professional achievements
and other related aspects of an individuals’ life.

learning practical skills, such as –
Self Awareness:
Persons having the quality of self
awareness know about their limitations and strengths, which enables them to
exercise self-control. It equips people to develop coping mechanisms during
intense emotional states. Self-aware people have a high degree of
self-confidence and also knowledge of their abilities.
Managing Emotions:
Managing emotions appropriately is
necessary. People who know how to manage their emotions can also channelize them
in a pragmatic manner. It is an important aspect for leadership qualities in an
individual. People who excel in managing emotions can recover far more quickly from
life's setbacks.
Self Motivation:
Self-motivation is necessary for emotional
intelligence. People having motives of high achievement always remain
optimistic even under unfavorable conditions. People having this skill are
found to be more productive.
Empathy:
Persons who are empathetic in nature always
take into consideration the feelings of others along with related contributing
factors in the process of making intelligent decisions. Empathy is an ability
to feel for others. They have also a deep understanding of cultural and ethnic
differences.
Social Skills:
Social skills or the ability to handle the
emotions of other people is an essential aspect of emotional intelligence. Much
of the art of relationship is emotional interactivity. It is a skill to
interact with other people effectively. People who excel in such type of skills
do well in anything that depends on interaction with others.
Developing Emotional Intelligence
Many of among you might be thinking whether
the Emotional Intelligence can be developed or not? Here the answer is YES, it
can be developed and nurtured even in adulthood and prove beneficial to one’s
health, performance, relationships and survival in a fast-changing competitive
world.
